Story of a Nation

Towns and communities around Australia form part of the story of the gold rush. To help ensure these stories are passed on to future generations, the Castlemaine Diggings and the Eureka Stockade Gardens have been included in the National Heritage List.

The Australian Government’s National Heritage List recognises and protects our most valued natural, Indigenous and historic heritage places. The List is truly representative, and reflects the story of our development as a nation, Australia’s spirit and ingenuity, and our unique, living landscapes.

This website celebrates Castlemaine and Ballarat as founding pieces of the gold story, and promotes sites across Australia where people can see and experience part of the story.

Support for this project was made available through an Australian Government Gift to the Nation to celebrate National Heritage listing of the Castlemaine Diggings National park and the Eureka Stockade Gardens. Gifts to the Nation is an important part of the Australian Government's commitment to protecting and promoting Australia's National Heritage places.
