- 'An exciting feat of pedestrianism'
The Ballarat Star of 11 December 1856 reported on an exciting feat of pedestrianism performed by a Mr Moorehead. A crowd witnessed Moorehead walk six miles and a half in the space of an hour.

TranscriptThe pedestrian match in which a Mr Moorehead backed himself for £20, to walk 6 miles and a-half within the hour, came off yesterday on the Main-road. The ground which commenced from near the Washington Hotel, having been duly measured by a qualified surveyor, a start was effected about half-past four. There was a large assemblage to witness the feat which was finished only six seconds before the expiration of the time. Mr S. Waldock was the referee, and announced the result amid much cheering.
