Often the gold seekers had to dig shallow shafts to get down to the gold-bearing deposits. This drawing shows a typical shaft that has gone through several layers of earth to reach the deposit containing the gold. Often the miners, on finding the gold layer, sank drives or excavated tunnels along the gold lead.
