Concentrating tables were widely used to separate heavy, gold-bearing mineral particles from sand produced by crushing quartz. The table illustrated here is a Wilfley-type table. Sand and water were piped to the table, which was shaken backwards and forwards - the lighter sand washed down over the table, while the mineral was moved along the table, and collected from one corner.
