Powerful pumps were required in many mines to keep the workings dry, particularly those working deep leads. Large Cornish beam pumps (bottom) were installed at many mines, but required construction of a elaborate pump-house. An Australian adaptation (top) used a reciprocating engine to provide the motion, simplifying installation.
