Description

This circa 1854 newspaper clipping of a wood engraving by F.A. Sleap, shows rebellious diggers swearing their allegiance to the Southern Cross. Little is known about Sleap, but he produced a number of engravings for the Illustrated Australian News. This particular image originally appeared in a supplement to that publication titled: ‘The History of Victoria Illustrated’, published on 1 August 1888.
