Where the topography of the goldfield was relatively flat, hydraulic sluicing could still be carried out, using powerful pumps to provide the water pressure to break down the gold-bearing (auriferous) banks. At right is a jet elevator, which used high-pressure water though a venturi to raise the gravels from the pond to the sluice boxes, where the gold was extracted. Water was recirculated, which meant that pump sluicing also suited drier goldfields.
