This painting shows some Aboriginal diggers in the central foreground who had formed a ‘party’ with white immigrant miners.
It depicts a meeting of gold diggers on the Mount Alexander Goldfields, near Bendigo on 15 December 1851. Led by Captain John Harrison, the diggers were protesting the intended raising of the licence fee from thirty shillings to three pounds.
