Title
Eureka Reef battery site, Castlemaine Diggings National Heritage Park
Description

This rare example of a pioneering quartz-crushing works at Eureka Reef would date from 1857 but was later reused in the early twentieth century as a blacksmith forge. It is thought to be the earliest surviving example in Australia. These remains are a product of the influence of Cornish miners, and demonstrate the technological transfer that occurred with Cornish migration to the Victorian gold fields.
