The first goldfield in northwest Victoria resulted from the discovery of ore at Avoca, by a party of prospectors on their way to Bendigo, in September 1853. By the end of the year, 2,000 miners were working on the main Avoca Lead with the population increasing to 14,000 by June 1854. The discoveries at Avoca were soon eclipsed by finds further east, at what was to become Maryborough.
