Prospectors were attracted to the Mudgee district of New South Wales by the discovery of the rich Canadian Lead in August 1871 and finds at Home Rule in May 1872. Many arrived with experience gained at other goldfields such as Forbes, Parkes and Kiandra. The large numbers of prospectors, estimated at 20,000 at the peak of the rush, formed part of a transient population: Home Rule did not endure as a gold field as the inhabitants left the area in search of richer sites.
