Kanowna, WA

Situated 18 kilometres to the northeast of Kalgoorlie-Boulder, Kanowna became established when gold was discovered there in 1893. By 1905, approximately 15,000 people inhabited the town as they searched the surrounding area for gold. In a desperate attempt to induce people to stay in the town after the gold returns diminished, a hoax was perpetrated by Father Long who claimed to have discovered a 100 pound nugget of gold. Renowned as a wild and remote frontier town in its heyday, Kanowna is now a ghost town.
