The discoverer of gold at Tarrangower (or Tarrengower) is reputed to have been Captain John G. Mechosk who, in December 1853, led a party that found alluvial gold in a gully about Bryant’s Range, 22 kilometres north-west of Castlemaine. Diggers flocked to the area and by 1854 the official population of Tarrangower was 5,220. It was re-named Maldon in 1856.
