Gold was discovered at Pine Creek (situated approximately 100 miles south of Darwin) in 1871, by men laying the overland telegraph line. Although it was initially relatively easy to collect gold, most of the auriferous ground was quartz and the gold prospectors lacked the resources and capital to exploit their discovery.
