The census collector of 1871 described Long Gully as a mining settlement and used the name to describe the urban extension outside the southern boundary of Maldon, i.e. the area around the intersection of Sells Lane with the Newstead Road. He recorded 16 dwellings and a population of 54. The actual ‘Long Gully’ starts near the centre of Maldon and joins other tributaries to form Tarrangower Creek.
