Tarilta, VIC

Part of the Mount Alexander goldfield, Tarilta was proclaimed a town in 1866. It is located approximately 5.6 kilometres south-east of Guildford, where the road to Vaughan crosses Tarilta Creek. Deep lead gold mining in the area involved cutting down through solid basalt rock and, for a time, yielded rich returns. In 1871, Tarilta’s population peaked at just over 400.
