Golden Point (Castlemaine), VIC

Rich alluvial gold was discovered at Golden Point on the Forest Creek, near Castlemaine, in October 1851, one of many such finds along the creek at that time. In February 1852, the Mount Alexander Mail reported that at ‘the commencement of the diggings on Forest Creek at Golden Point’ for many miles one could see ‘a continued line of canvas habitations; in every case where the creek is joined by a creek or gully a similar line of tents may be seen as far as the eye can reach’. A commissioner’s camp was set up there in 1852 to issue licences and keep order.
