In 1872 gold was discovered at Yam Creek in an area known as the Rum Jungle. Prospectors found their way to the Yam Creek and neighbouring diggings by following the Overland telegraph. The Rum Jungle subsequently became renowned for its uranium reserves. In Xavier Herbert's novel, Capricornia, it was depicted as Black Adder Creek.
